Return from hamstring injury
A great example of effective sports therapy application is the common hamstring injury. Lets take the example of the local triathlete who has been training for their favorite local sprint event. During a session of interval training they have pulled up with a pain in the back of the leg and suspect a hamstring injury. This is the first time such an thing has happened to them and they decide to book in for some professional support. What can they expect?
Step 1. A detailed assessment. Mechanism of injury, symptoms and background including their training experience and medical history
Step 2. Establish goals. What is the aim here? is it to be able to complete in 2 weeks or 2 months.
Step 3. Physical examination. Range of motion, muscle testing, special clinical tests.
Step 4. Diagnosis and explanation. Is this a full tear or a muscle strain. Are further tests such as scans likely to be required. What is the likely time frame for recovery.
Step 5: Commence treatment and rehabilitation. This could be a combination of hands on treatment an carefully planned exercise rehabilitation.
Step 6: Monitor progress and review goals until point of discharge and full recovery.
